The 1.3 trillion-dollar construction field currently lacks a strong team of leaders to innovate and build for tomorrow. In October 2020 at the peak number of job openings, the count of open construction jobs increased to 410,000 positions, the highest measure in the history of the data series going back to late 2000.1
The Labor Market Continues to Tighten
The job openings rate in construction surged to 5.4% in October 2021. The post-virus peak rate of hiring occurred in May 2020 (10.3%) as a rebound took hold in home building and remodeling.1 The jobs gains (hiring rates) have increased during the second half of this year.
The shortage of skilled leaders in this industry is a national crisis. Yet, the field cannot attract enough bright leaders because today’s students have not considered attending college for a career in construction, leaving many of the typically technical trades lacking new leadership.
