STONEPILE llc’s Career Highlight—Construction Framer

As one of the first on site, a framer reads the blueprints and kicks off the building process. In this important role, framers install the structural members of a building and prepare them for the next phase of construction, where cladding* and other materials go into place. Framers are versatile and work with wood, steel, concrete, and other framing materials in their work.

*Cladding: a covering or coating on a structure or material.

Did you know: The construction framer is one of the first people to arrive on a job site.

The median full-time salary for a framing carpenter is approximately $42,700, but it varies based on location, demand, and experience. Highly skilled framers can make $90,000 or more, depending on the hours worked.

The job of a construction framer is to build the framing for a residential or commercial structure. A framer’s responsibilities are to read blueprints or architectural schematics and construct the building’s framework according to the plans.

  • Selecting, measuring, and marking materials for exterior doors and windows, foundations, floors, walls, and roofs
  • Cutting and shaping materials and joining them with nails, screws, bolts, or glue
  • Developing work plans
  • Reading and interpreting construction drawings and blueprints

With experience, a framer can become a supervisor who monitors a crew and may be eligible for higher pay. Other framers go to school to learn about construction techniques and basic engineering.
